According to the Ketttering Foundation, only 5% of Americans take citizenship seriously. How do people become politically engaged? How do they build civic communities and generate the political energy to express the public will? David Mathews, president and CEO of the Kettering Foundation, has made answering those questions, and finding ways to improve democracy, his life’s work. He is also chairman of the Council of Public Policy Education and author of Politics for People: Finding a Responsible Public Voice, published by the University of Illinois Press.
